So the story goes that I started to hear rumblings on Twitter that Indonesians were going overseas for the sole purpose of watching movies.
At first I rolled my eyes and thought “Who the hell does that?”. You see, allegedly due to some unforeseen fuck up involving unresolved film import tax payments between film distributors & the government, local cinemas haven’t been able to show highly anticipated major movie titles since the start of 2011 such as ‘Thor’, ‘Fast Five’, ‘The Hangover II’, ‘X-Men: First Class’ to ‘Transformers: Dark of The Moon’.
From having too many 3D movies screening at one time to having no notable movies at all (save for smaller titles like ‘Source Code’, ‘Limitless’, ‘Scream 4’ to UK film ‘Attack The Block’ along the way), it’s been an excruciating few long months for the typical moviegoer, and for the typical muggle it’s been a long & torturing wait to see if ‘Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part II’ gets to eventually screen on Indonesian shores.
Current developments seem to point that efforts are being made to resolve the matter (albeit rather slower than expected), despite certain government officials blatantly claiming awhile ago that those movie imports should have reached cinemas by now. He might as well be the human reincarnation of a baby’s diaper (i.e. full of shit), but here’s hoping Indonesia gets to see the movies at the same time as the rest of the world like we once used to.
In the meantime, me and some friends decided to leg it and head to Singapore for a short holiday while catching some summer movies. It’s not like we’re loaded or anything, but under these unusual circumstances and how things were going, we made a plan and decided to go for it. So far it’s been totally worth it, but if you put things into perspective it could look like a total waste of money or otherwise it’s not unlike music fans going overseas to watch their favourite band play or a football fan traveling to watch their favourite team play a friendly match that only has a single stop in the region.
I guess it’s nice I had the chance to see the final installment of the Harry Potter movies during the opening weekend. My dad bought me ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ during a business trip to South Africa (if I remember correctly), then I had to work my way from the beginning by borrowing my friend Anggi’s books in high school. I stopped reading when the first movies came out probably due to a short attention span, and I think it’s an achievement in itself that I’ve been able to remain spoiler-free until the final credits rolled.
I’m about to go in to see ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ in a few minutes, so while I get to see the end of Shia LeBouf’s douchey self in the movie versions of my childhood memories and comparing curvy wurvy Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in 3D to one dimensional former fanboy favourite Megan Fox in 34C, may major movies make their way to Indonesian screens once again.
